 The Loch Ness Monster

Is something out there in the water? I set out to learn more about our Scottish friend Nessie– what she is, what she might be, and what she probably isn’t (but has been mistaken for).

This is a multi-media, explorational project, encompassing multiple approaches to the topic such as education, participation, and history.

Illustrated Poster

The first component in this series is an illustrated poster featuring five real-world creatures that have been proposed as plausible explanations for the myth. This component takes a “casual interest” viewpoint; the style is inspired by historical zoological illustrations.

 NessieWatch App

The second component is a social app focused on the hoaxes that surround Nessie. The app explores famous ways people have falsified sightings throughout history, and encourages users to participate in this rich history by sharing their own hoaxes and false sightings to a dedicated photosharing feed. This component takes a skeptic’s viewpoint by focusing on hoaxes and humor.

Nessie Throughout History

The third and final component in this series is an animated information design piece giving a comprehensive history of all recorded sightings as well as major progress in the research and cryptozoology fields. This part of the project required intensive research and the ability to distill large amounts of data into a digestible result, and research and data-based animation gave me opportunities to explore new horizons in terms of design and skill. This component takes a serious, cryptozoological viewpoint.
